Waste Not, Wag a Lot at Nevada Dining

What would normally be tossed out is getting a second purpose, and it is helping animals in need.

Nevada Dining at the University of Nevada, Reno is hosting a Waste Not, Wag a Lot event on Thursday, April 16, bringing the Wolf Pack community together to turn leftover ingredients into dog treats for local shelters.

The initiative focuses on repurposing approved food scraps from campus dining operations, including items like carrot and cucumber peels, into treats that are safe for dogs. Organizers say the goal is to reduce food waste while also supporting animal welfare efforts in the community.

During the event, volunteers will help package more than 500 freshly made treats. Those treats will then be donated to local organizations, including the SPCA of Northern Nevada and the Nevada Humane Society.

“By reducing food waste and supporting animal welfare at the same time, we’re showing what’s possible when sustainability and community engagement come together,” said a representative from Nevada Dining.

Nevada Dining says the program is part of a broader effort to focus on sustainability, waste reduction, and community partnerships. By turning food scraps into something usable, the program aims to cut down on landfill waste while supporting shelters that care for animals.

Organizers say events like this are also meant to encourage students, faculty, and staff to think differently about food waste and take part in efforts that have a direct impact beyond campus.
