Over the last few weeks, there have been multiple mountain lion sightings in Virginia City.

People have seen them at all times of the day, and some residents say they've seen groups of them in the streets or even people's backyards.

Because of this, some residents have been extra cautious lately.

"Every time you come outside the backdoor or the side door or when you park at night coming home, you do the double look, the double check like what am I going to find, so it is, it's nerve wracking," said Margy Schieberl.

Schieberl also says that not long ago, she opened up her backdoor and saw a mountain lion slowly walking around.

She also says multiple neighbors have had close encounters, especially during the early morning hours.

Mountain lion attacks are pretty rare. but the Nevada Department of Wildlife wants to share some safety tips with people.

People should never approach a mountain lion, especially one that is with cubs.

If you run into one, try to stay calm, back away slowly, and make sure you never turn your back to it.

If you believe you are in danger, try making yourself appear larger than you are by throwing your hands up, or use nearby objects such as rocks or sticks to fight back if necessary.

It is also important to remember that mountain lions are most active from dusk to dawn.
