The McCarran Chapter of Walmart Heart hosted an event for eight-year-old Matthew Santoyo and his family.Â
Santoyo was born with severe congenital spinal cord compression and a tethered spinal cord.Â
He went through multiple surgeries to correct the issues, but ended up losing his ability to move from the waist down at the age of six and is now in a wheelchair.
Walmart Heart hosted a BBQ celebration on Sunday, July 28 at the 7th Street Walmart location.Â
Santoyo was awarded a $500 shopping spree at Walmart and tickets for Sunday's Aces game.Â
The Reno Police Department and Nevada State Police also attended and escorted Santoyo and his family from Walmart to Greater Nevada Field.
Walmart Heart is a community outreach program where Walmart truck drivers volunteer their time to support community members who are suffering from chronic illnesses.
