Law enforcement agencies across Washoe County are increasing enforcement efforts as illegal street racing and roadway takeover events continue to grow across the region ahead of summer, according to a release from the Reno Police Department.

Authorities said agencies have seen an increase in calls for service and community complaints involving reckless driving, noise disturbances, and the takeover of parking lots and roadways.

Officials said the events pose significant public safety risks because of dangerous driving behavior, large uncontrolled crowds, and the potential for crashes, injuries, and violence. The activity also creates ongoing quality-of-life concerns for nearby neighborhoods and businesses, particularly during late-night hours.

The Reno Police Department, Washoe County Sheriff’s Office, Nevada State Police, Sparks Police Department, University of Nevada Police Department and other partners are working together on enforcement and deterrence efforts targeting the events.

Enforcement actions may include traffic citations, arrests, and car towing and impoundments, along with efforts to identify repeat offenders and event organizers. Authorities said the collaborative operations will continue regularly.

During the latest operation, authorities issued 26 citations and made two DUI arrests. Reno police issued six citations and made one DUI arrest.
