Washoe County is moving forward with amending its master plan to address heat extremes and urban heat.

The Washoe County Planning Commission discussed the issue on Tuesday night.

It follows a new law going into effect at the start of the month requiring the change.

Under Assembly Bill 96, cities and counties with more than 100,000 people must include heat mitigation as part of their master plan.

The plans must address access to public cooling centers and public drinking water.

They must also include cool building practices and address shade over paved surfaces.

The county discussed coordinating with emergency management on the issue.

They also discussed possible new policies to address the issue, as well as raise awareness about extreme heat and its impacts.

The issue now goes to the Board of Commissioners to discuss.
