Phone Scam with WCSO badge

The Washoe County Sheriff's Office is sending an alert out to residents about a fraud email scam that's going around.

In a Facebook post, WCSO says the scam involves people getting an email saying they must pay an application fee for in-process development applications to receive final approval.

Detailed project information, instructions for payment, and a request to submit proof of payment are all given in the email that a person receives.

WCSO says while the email may appear right, all of this information can be found online, and no payment through email is required for development applications submitted through the Washoe County Planning Program.

Some scam indicators may include:

  • Vague titles, incorrect info, or typos
  • Blurry or distorted logos
  • Unexpected Payment Requests
  • Official Washoe County emails that end in "@washoecounty.gov"
  • Scammers pressuring you to pay immediately

WCSO would like to remind the public not to respond, click links, or send payment, and to just delete the email.

You can also verify directly by contacting the Washoe County Planning Program directly at (775) 328-6100.

Information about general services can be found at the Washoe County website.

WCSO says if you believe you’ve been a victim of a scam, document all communications and contact local law enforcement immediately.
