The joy of reading is now sitting right outside the Carson City Corps, thanks to a new project built by local youth.

The Salvation Army’s youth group, Side Quest, built and installed a new neighborhood library outside the Carson City Corps this week to help share the joy of reading with the community. The small library box is stocked with youth fantasy and science fiction books, along with survival guides, and is open for the community to take books or leave books from their own collections.

“The kids worked hard to make our little neighborhood library using carpentry skills they’ve learned and were proud to install it outside the Corps at 911 E. Second Street,” said Captain Ernie Evans, corps officer for The Salvation Army. “They’re hoping it will be a nice addition to the neighborhood and encourage more people to unplug from their devices and spend time with a good book.”

Side Quest is also looking to grow, with children ages 10 to 17 welcome to stop by the Carson City Corps to meet officers and staff and learn more about programs. The group meets on Thursday from 3 to 7 p.m. and hosts a bible study on Wednesdays from 3 to 7 p.m., both at 911 E. Second Street.

Members of the group also take part in community service projects, including shoveling sidewalks in the winter and donation-based car washes in the warmer months to help fund chaperoned outings throughout the year. Past outings have included trips to Lake Tahoe and the Kaboom-Con! comic convention.

Guardians interested in having their children join the group can pick up a permission slip at the Carson City Corps.
