On opening weekends, the box office wears pink.
At least it does when the adaptation of Broadway's "Mean Girls" musical opens in theaters.
Paramount's musical reimagining of the cult classic Lindsay Lohan movie from 2004 opened to a solid $28 million over the three-day weekend. It is expected to reach $32 million by the end of the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday. International grosses aren't yet available.
In its first weekend, "Mean Girls" outgrossed the movie that spawned it by about $4 million, and with a budget of only $36 million, should find itself in the black with relative ease. Not bad for a movie originally made to go straight to streaming on Paramount+.
Opening a strong second, Jason Statham's latest action flick "The Beekeeper" nearly doubled what box office analysts were forecasting it to make.
The nearly $17 million the movie buzzed to in its first three days is sweet as honey for its studio, MGM. Its grosses are expected to swarm to more than $19 million by the end of Monday.
Overseas the movie has performed less impressively, bringing in just $2.8 million for a global haul of nearly $22 million so far.
After taking the box office crown for three of the last four weekends, "Wonka" finds itself in third this weekend, bringing in another $8.4 million. It is expected to reach nearly $11 million by the end of the MLK holiday, which will bring its domestic total to nearly $179 million.
Overseas the reception for "Wonka" continues to be as smooth as fine milk chocolate, with the film earning more than $329 million for a worldwide take of nearly $508 million so far.
In fourth place "Anyone but You" continues proving to be the little rom com that could.
The movie's 29% drop from last weekend is pretty small but represents the first time since its release that it has declined in ticket sales from one weekend to the next.
It brought in $7 million this weekend and should have $8 million by the end of the holiday, which will bring its gross in the U.S. to roughly $56.5 million.
Overseas the movie has added nearly $23 million for a global box office of nearly $80 million so far.
Rounding out the top five, Universal and Illumination Entertainment's "Migration" continues to take wing.
The movie pulled in $6.2 million in three days and should have more than $8 million after four, potentially migrating past "Anyone but You" on the charts.
By the end of the holiday weekend, it is expected to have made nearly $88 million in North America and nearly $87 million elsewhere to bring its worldwide receipts to nearly $175 million.
