Saudi Arabia has confirmed that Yemen’s Houthi rebels tried to attack its capital with a ballistic missile. It was the first targeting of Riyadh since the escalation in fighting with the Tehran-backed rebels that has opened a new front in the Iran war. Meanwhile, the head of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council said Tehran has sent Washington its conditions for ending the war via Qatar, a key mediator. In Gaza, Israeli strikes killed three people. And Israel launched airstrikes in southern Lebanon after a bomb planted by the Hezbollah militant group wounded two soldiers.
Saudi Arabia has confirmed that Yemen’s Houthi rebels tried to attack its capital with a ballistic missile. It was the first attack targeting Riyadh since the escalation in fighting between the Iran-backed Houthis and Yemeni government forces backed by the Saudis. The statement late Saturday by the Saudi-led coalition fighting the Houthis came long after the early morning attempt, which the coalition said was intercepted. The statement also said the Houthis tried to attack civilian infrastructure in the Red Sea port city of Yanbu but they were thwarted. The recent fighting has opened a new front in the Iran war.
A senior Houthi official says the group has assured the Trump administration it won’t attack U.S. vessels in the Red Sea. This comes as the Houthis warn countries against joining Saudi Arabia in Yemen’s civil war. Meanwhile, Iran’s foreign minister plans to stop in Qatar before heading to the U.N. General Assembly. In Egypt, the CIA director met with President el-Sissi to discuss the Iranian crisis. In the West Bank, an Israeli man was shot dead, and tensions have surged with increased settler attacks against Palestinians.
