A former Ukrainian army officer has gone on trial in Germany over undersea explosions that damaged the Nord Stream gas pipelines four years ago. The trial, which began Wednesday, is expected to last months. The suspect faces charges of causing an explosion, damaging property and being an “accomplice to war crimes.” The trial is being held under strict security at the Hanseatic Higher Regional Court in Hamburg. The explosions, which occurred in September 2022, damaged pipelines carrying Russian natural gas to Germany. Prosecutors say the aim was to disrupt gas deliveries and prevent Russia from financing military operations. Ukraine denies involvement.
