Guinea's civil protection service says a mountainous heap of refuse has collapsed at Dar Es Salam, the largest landfill in the capital of Conakry, killing 30 people. Heavy rain that started around 2 a.m. on Sunday washed over the refuse, triggering a landslide that buried nearby shacks. Lt. Col. Baldé Mamadou Bailo, the sanitation officer for the military engineering battalion, said the site — an open-air waste dump that is the largest in the city — had been designated for closure on Sunday.
