Guinea's civil protection service says a mountainous heap of refuse has collapsed at Dar Es Salam, the largest landfill in the capital Conakry, killing 30 people. Heavy rain that started around 3 a.m. washed over the refuse, triggering a landslide that buried nearby shacks. The site was designated for closure on Sunday, according to Lt. Col. Baldé Mamadou Bailo, the sanitation officer for the military engineering battalion. The site, an open-air waste dump that is the largest in the city, had been designated for closure on Sunday.
