The U.S. stock market inched to more records as winners of the artificial-intelligence boom kept driving higher. The S&P 500 rose 0.1% Tuesday. The Dow Jones Industrial Average added 0.4%, and the Nasdaq composite edged up by less than 0.1%. All three indexes set all-time highs. Marvell Technology leaped to its biggest gain ever after Nvidia’s CEO suggested it could be the next company to be worth $1 trillion. But Alphabet weighed on the market after the parent company of Google said it's raising $80 billion to help pay for its AI investments. Oil prices rose.
Oil prices rose following the latest threats to the U.S.-Iran ceasefire, and U.S. stocks retreated from their records. The S&P 500 fell 0.5% Wednesday from its all-time high and was heading toward its first decline in 10 days. The Dow Jones Industrial Average dropped 466 points, and the Nasdaq composite sank 0.8%. Oil prices rose roughly 2% after both the United States and Iran said they launched retaliations for earlier attacks or attempted ones. Treasury yields also climbed to further crank up the pressure on stocks. The smallest U.S. stocks fell to the sharpest losses.
