Zach Cregger’s “Resident Evil” is giving the North American box office a boost in its first weekend. Sony Pictures says Sunday that the film has earned an estimated $60 million in ticket sales from 3,684 locations in the U.S. and Canada. This marks a franchise best, surpassing most previous films in their entire domestic runs. The audience was overwhelmingly male and under 35. “Practical Magic 2” landed in second place with $12.2 million in its second weekend. “Spider-Man: Brand New Day,” “The Odyssey” and “Coyote vs. Acme” rounded out the top five.
