A magnitude 7.8 earthquake has rocked the southern Philippines, leaving at least 12 people dead and injuring over 200. The quake struck Monday, causing significant damage in the Mindanao region. Officials say a 3-foot tsunami hit nearby coasts, but no damage or casualties were reported from it. The strongest quake to hit the Philippines this year was centered at sea near Sarangani province. General Santos, a major city, was among the hardest hit. Numerous aftershocks followed, and the quake was felt as far as Malaysia. The Philippines frequently experiences earthquakes due to its location on the Pacific "Ring of Fire."
