The FBI has arrested a California real estate agent at Los Angeles International Airport as she was leaving the country and accused her of spying on the Taiwan president’s family for China. The FBI and U.S. prosecutors say Wanying Zhang surveilled the Taiwanese president’s son and his family. She was arrested on charges for working for China as an unregistered agent. Zhang appeared in downtown Los Angeles federal court Monday for an initial hearing. She has not yet been formally indicted and is due in court again Wednesday. Taiwan confirmed President Lai Ching-te’s relatives were the targets and said it condemned the disregard for human rights and sovereignty.
