The U.S. has launched more strikes on Iran after President Donald Trump said Washington is “reinstating” a blockade on Iran in the Strait of Hormuz. Trump separately suggested the United States will charge other ships for safe passage, upending hundreds of years of American policy supporting freedom of navigation across the globe. Iran responded with attacks targeting Bahrain, Jordan and two tankers associated with the United Arab Emirates traveling through the strait, killing one mariner and wounding eight others. The Emirates threatened to retaliate against Iran, potentially drawing the nation home to Abu Dhabi and Dubai back into fighting with Tehran. The attacks come as Iran and the U.S. both vie for control of the strait.
President Donald Trump said Iranian ships will no longer be able to travel through the Strait of Hormuz and America would charge a 20% toll on other countries’ eligible cargo, escalating tensions after weekend of attacks by both nations to assert control of the critical waterway. The European Union's top diplomat says the strait should return to how it was before the war — open and free. Lindsey Graham’s sister, Darline Graham Nordone, has been named as her late brother’s temporary replacement in the U.S. Senate. Graham was one of Trump's closest allies in Congress, advocating for Ukraine and for military aggression against Iran. Republicans with just 51 members available to vote for Trump's agenda.
A focal point of the Iran war is increasingly about who controls the Strait of Hormuz — a waterway that for decades was a relatively safe transit route for Middle East oil and natural gas supplies. Iran says an interim ceasefire gave it the right to establish the terms under which ships traversed the strait. To exert control over the waterway and gain leverage in negotiations with the U.S., it has threatened and fired upon vessels that did not stick to its preferred route. President Donald Trump sought Monday to tip the scales by reimposing a blockade on Iran. He said the U.S. controls the strait and would charge fees for safe passage — essentially borrowing from the Iranian playbook.
