President Donald Trump’s administration has appealed to the Supreme Court in its push to require California election officials to set aside thousands of disputed mail ballots. The federal government suspects these ballots may be from noncitizens. The Justice Department sued the largely Democratic state over a list of about 20,000 flagged voters. California officials argue the list is full of errors and that setting aside ballots could disenfranchise eligible midterm election voters. The Republican Trump administration has prioritized identifying noncitizen voters this year, despite them being rare. The Justice Department has moved the case quickly.
