The chairman of the Pyramid Lake Paiute Tribe announced he is stepping down from his role.
James Phoenix has served as chairman for one year and three months.
Phoenix posted on Facebook that he will be stepping down due to medical and family reasons.Â
He said he underwent surgery recently and has been in and out of his office for over six weeks and expects this to last at least another month. He said this choice is what is best for him, his family and the tribe.
He also said he is prepared to help with the transfer of duties, whether they are to existing staff members or a successor.
"It has been a privilege to serve in this capacity for the past year and three months," said Phoenix on Facebook. "The experience and insights I have garnered and developed during my tenure here has been invaluable."
The Pyramid Lake Paiute Tribal Council said on Facebook, "The Pyramid Lake Paiute Tribal Council wishes to thank Chairman Phoenix for his service. We wish him a speedy recovery and success for what lies ahead."
