The Washoe County School District school board selected JJ Phoenix to fill the vacant District C seat.

The seat vacated after former member Joe Rodriguez resigned after winning a seat in Sparks City Council.

The other finalists were Jason Bushey, Felipe Escamilla and Marcus Hodges.

After he was selected, Phoenix said he's looking forward to getting feedback from the community.

"Engagement with the community so that we hear from the students and we hear from the teachers and we hear from the staff. And we actually hear from the community - their input. To me, that's most important."

Phoenix is the former Chairman of the Pyramid Lake Paiute Tribal Council and a retired Reno Police officer.
