It’s been a wet water year in Reno with double the amount of precipitation falling at the airport compared to average. The only other time more rain and snow fell in Reno was in 2016/2017. The water year goes from October 1st through September 30th. It was a slow start to the water year in 2022. October was a dry month with a deficit of nearly half an inch. November didn't fare much better. Then in December the storm gates opened, and Reno got just over four inches of precipitation more than we usually see. January, March, and May were also wet months for us in the Truckee Meadows. We finished the month of September four tenths of an inch above average too. Six hundredths of an inch of rain fell on September 30th. We also got some rain from the remnants of what was Hurricane Hilary in September.
Nearly sixteen inches of precipitation fell at the Reno Airport during the 2016/2017 water year, which is the most on record for Reno. 2022/2023 takes the second spot, and 1982/1983 takes the third spot with 12.72” falling at the airport. On average, Reno sees 7.35” of precipitation during the entire water year. You may have received more or less rain/snow this past year where you live, but where it counts is the airport.
This past September was much cooler than last year. Reno hit 90 degrees only one time this year, whereas it happened thirteen times in 2022. Average is nine. The average high temperature this past month was almost 81 degrees, or three degrees below average. Reno also saw four days in the 60’s. Not to mention valley highs on October 1st were only in the 50’s. Most of the rain fell this weekend in the Sierra south of Tahoe, or east of Reno in the Basin and Range. Fallon saw over an inch of rain Saturday through Sunday morning. Carson City picked up just over an inch, and the Hawthorne Airport received just under an inch of rain by Sunday morning at 11:20am.
High pressure moves in this week allowing temperatures to warm. Afternoon temperatures will reach the mid to upper 60’s on Monday, the 70’s by Tuesday, and 80 come Friday. It will still be chilly in the morning. Have a good week.
