Reno Police Made 1 Arrest and Issued 61 Citations in Pedestrian Safety Enforcement

The Reno Police Department (RPD) Traffic Division conducted Pedestrian and School Zone Safety Operations from November 15 to November 29, resulting in 1 DUI arrest, 144 traffic citations, and 39 warnings.

With the assistance of a grant provided by the Nevada Office of Traffic Safety, the Reno Police Department Traffic Division eleven officers conducted these enforcement operations either within the designated Pedestrian Safety Zones in the downtown area, or within an active school zone.

School zones were selected based on input from citizens related to unsafe driving in those zones.

Police focused their efforts on drivers and pedestrians that were violating those laws which enhance pedestrian safety.

Nevada state law requires pedestrians to use sidewalks, crosswalks and pedestrian bridges and obey all traffic-control signs and signals. If there is no sidewalk, pedestrians must walk on the left side of the street, facing traffic.

For motorists, they must yield to pedestrians and avoid passing vehicles that are stopped for pedestrians.

RPD said a good rule of thumb for all is to, “Look Up, Look Out” — look up away from your phone and look out at your surroundings.

RPD, the Nevada Department of Public Safety, and the Office of Traffic Safety would like to advise motorists and pedestrians to share the road, stay alert and aware of their surroundings, and abide by laws designed to protect all road users.

More information about the law and safe behaviors for both pedestrians and drivers is available on the Zero Fatalities website at www.ZeroFatalitiesNV.com/pedestrian.
