Sierra Nevada Zoological Park

The Sierra Nevada Zoological Park announced on their Facebook page that they are closing permanently.

In a statement, a spokesperson for the park said several factors made it difficult for the park to remain open.

The statement cited declining attendance and rising costs, including the cost of the lease, maintenance and repairs, and inflation as contributing to the closure.

The statement also said squatters at the property next door were engaged in criminal activities and destroying zoo property leading to frequent police activity, and that operators didn't feel the location was safe for the public or their animals.

The statement claims local authorities did not provide any help removing the squatters.

"Our park animals have been relocated to other facilities where we know they will receive exceptional care for the rest of their lives," said the statement in part.

The statement concluded by thanking volunteers, donors, and those who visited the zoo over the years.

"We'll miss you all! It is our heartfelt hope that the experience you've had while visiting our park animals has enhanced your life and left you with many great memories," the statement concluded.
