The Teacher's Warehouse in Reno officially closed its doors on July 30, marking the final day the facility made it possible for teachers to come by and pick up free supplies.

The Education Alliance of Washoe County, in partnership with Washoe County School District, made the decision to shut down the facility after noticing decreased donations and shifting demand toward digital resources.

Moving forward, they plan to pivot to a more targeted distribution model, directly delivering materials to schools based on specific needs identified by principals, rather than operating their free warehouse model.

"It was a really difficult decision to close the Teacher's Warehouse, but we really felt by looking at, ya know, how many teachers were utilizing the space, it had gone down over the years, and I think that's partially because also our donations to the warehouse have gone down over the years," said Sarah Gobbs-Hill, Executive Director for Education Alliance.

One local teacher, Matthew Cope, says the departure was bittersweet.

"it's waivered over the last little bit just because I know the donations are just a little bit different, coming in," he said. "Education is changing, which is kind of cool because Education Alliance is pivoting really well for that, and I think, and it's been really helpful to see how the organization is adjusting."

According to education leaders, closing the warehouse was a difficult decision, but with the ever-evolving direction of technology, the change will bring new opportunities, and donations will always be welcomed.

The new, targeted donations approach aims to meet classroom needs more directly, ensuring efficient and intentional support.
