UPDATE - JUNE 16:
Humboldt County deputies are now investigating what they describe as a homicide-suicide on Middle Way in Winnemucca.
Deputies responded to Middle Way on June 14 at approximately 12:47 a.m. after receiving a report of multiple gunshots in the area.
As deputies arrived, a 59-year-old man was seen near the roadway holding a rifle and then collapsed as they approached. The gun was secured, and he was pronounced dead at the scene from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Deputies also found a 53-year-old woman near the roadway, about 30 yards away from the man. She was pronounced dead at the scene from multiple gunshot wounds.
Investigators later determined the two were husband and wife who had been living separately at the time of the incident. Based on evidence, investigators believe the man waited in a concealed location near the residence and ambushed his estranged wife as she arrived at the entrance to the driveway, shooting her multiple times with a rifle before turning the gun on himself as deputies arrived in the area.
The Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office says the case remains an active investigation, but there is no known ongoing threat to the public.
The department extended condolences to family members, friends, and others affected by the tragedy. Anyone with information is asked to contact the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office at (775)623-6419.
