The Truckee Police Department is warning residents about card skimming scams.
"Card skimming" is when a scammer installs a device known as a skimmer on card readers. The skimmer collects card numbers, which the thieves can then use to steal money and make purchases.
Skimmers may be found at ATMs, gas stations, restaurants, retail stores, and other locations.
You can spot a car skimmer by doing a visual inspection of the card reader before putting your card in. Look for odd physical attributes or broken security tape.
Local businesses should also regularly check their machines for skimmers or signs of tampering.
People should also report any suspicious activity as soon as it's discovered.
