The Washoe County Sheriff's Office is reminding people that Dog Valley Road and Henness Pass Road are not safe alternative routes should I-80 close.

Both roads north of north of Stampede Reservoir are narrow dirt lanes linking California State Route 89 to Verdi. They are lined with steep mountain slopes to the north and a drainage ditch to the south.

With snow and ice, driving on the roads can be very dangerous, causing accidents and stranding drivers, according to a WCSO press release.

"Too often, tourists or unfamiliar travelers in the High Sierra attempt to bypass I-80 closures using GPS, unknowingly endangering themselves," said the Sheriff's Office in a statement.
