Pakistan’s foreign minister says Islamabad will soon host talks between the U.S. and Iran. There was no immediate word Sunday from Washington or Tehran. The announcement came after foreign ministers from regional countries met in Islamabad. The Iranian parliament speaker dismissed the talks in Pakistan as a cover after some 2,500 U.S. Marines trained in amphibious landings arrived in the Middle East. The speaker threatened that U.S. troops would be set “on fire” if they attempt a ground invasion in the monthlong war. U.S. President Donald Trump didn’t address the potential Pakistan talks but said Sunday night that Washington was in discussions with Iran and “we’re doing extremely well in that negotiation.”
U.S. President Donald Trump is threatening widespread destruction of Iran’s energy resources and other vital infrastructure, potentially including desalination plants that supply drinking water. Trump leveled the threats Monday, saying the U.S. would strike if a deal to end the war is not reached “shortly.” Iran, meanwhile, struck a key water and electrical plant in Kuwait, and an oil refinery in Israel came under attack. A drone hit a Kuwaiti oil tanker in Dubai waters, causing a fire. Israel and the U.S. launched a new wave of strikes on Iran, as the war raged with no end in sight.
President Donald Trump says Iran faces massive damage to its energy system unless it quickly agrees to end the war. Trump said Monday talks showed “great progress" but he threatened to hit power plants, oil wells and Kharg Island. Iran has warned it could mine the Persian Gulf if it is invaded. The U.S. and Israel kept up strikes on Monday. Iran hit a key water and power plant in Kuwait and an oil refinery in Israel. Israel has invaded southern Lebanon to expel the Iran-backed militant group Hezbollah, in what Israeli leaders suggest could be another extended occupation of that country.
