NTFPD: One Person Drowned Near Agate Bay Community Pier, Not Wearing Life Jacket

The North Tahoe Fire Protection District (NTFPD) says they responded to the Agate Bay Community Pier area on Wednesday for reports of a dinghy tipped over and a victim missing in the water.

They said the victim was reported to be 100-150 feet from the shore.

They said crews were able to swim out to the victim's location and divers found them 15 feet under the water.

NTFPD says a firefighter was able to retrieve the victim and they were in cardiac arrest.

They said despite their efforts, the victim could not be revived.

NTFPD wants to remind residents that 96 percent of drowning victims were not wearing life jackets. They said even in late summer and close to shore, Lake Tahoe is extremely cold and may result in Cold Shock Response, which can take down even the strongest and most experienced swimmers.

They said multiple agencies assisted with the rescue and give their condolences to the victim's loved ones.

The identity of the victim was not released at this time.
