Washoe County Sheriff's Deputies say they located Russell Roberts early Saturday morning in a downtown Reno motel.
With the help of Washoe County Detectives and patrol Deputies, Reno Police Department SET and robbery-homicide Detectives, and Detectives from the Sparks Police Department, Roberts was found in a motel in the 600 block of 4th street just after midnight Saturday morning. The Washoe County Sheriff's Office says he surrendered without incident and aw taken to a local hospital for treatment of a gunshot wound to his leg.Â
Roberts will be booked into custody on the outstanding warrants and remaining charges after he is released from the hospital.Â
The Washoe County Sheriff’s Office identified Roberts as a person of interest in the investigation of Thursday morning’s shooting incident involving a Reno Police Officer who was struck by a vehicle on Arlington Avenue. On Friday afternoon the Washoe County Sheriff's Office located his vehicle but had not found him.Â
Roberts, 24 years old, was considered to be armed and dangerous and has outstanding felony warrants from Parole and Probation and the Sparks Police Department.Â
Deputies say around 1:30 a.m. on Thursday, August 13, 2015. A Reno Police Department Officer was responding to a call in the 100 block of Arlington Avenue when he made contact with a subject. The subject struck the Officer with his vehicle and the officer fired on the vehicle. The officer was transported to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries. The officer is now back at home and is expected to make a full recovery.Â
"He has a criminal history that would indicate he would flee and fight with the police," said Lt. Tom Green, with the Washoe County Sheriff's Office.Â
A July 2013 arrest record shows Roberts was booked into the Washoe County Jail on drug-related charges, escape by a felony prisoner, and gun possession by a prohibited person. Roberts also has several criminal offenses in his past. Seven to be exact since 2013.Â
Back in the year 2013, Roberts had three run ins with the law. One was a domestic violence related arrest. Later he was arrested in a Sparks motel for intent to sell, possession of a controlled substance, possession of a stolen vehicle and possession of an illegal gun. Roberts was also charged when he broke out of a cop car after being arrested. From 2014 to 2015, Roberts has skipped his court hearings and violated his probation multiple times.
The Reno Police Department invoked the Regional Officer Involved Shooting Protocol based on the overall circumstances and the potential that the suspect had been struck by the Officer’s rounds. The Washoe County Sheriff’s Office is now the lead investigative agency.
