From the City of Reno:

The Reno Police Department would like to remind our community that the month of April has been nationally recognized as Sexual Assault Awareness Month (SAAM). During SAAM activists raise awareness about sexual violence and educate communities and individuals on how to prevent it.

The Reno Police Department and our Victim Advocates encourage everyone in the community to report any incident of sexual assault whether they are a victim or a witness to the incident.

Some safety tips to remember to better protect you from becoming a victim of a sexual assault are:

1.     Know your surroundings

a.     Know your location if you have to call 911

b.    Scan the area for open businesses to run to

c.     Scan for areas were someone could be hiding

2.     Trust your gut feelings

a.     If someone looks suspicious they probably are and should be avoided

b.    If you feel you are getting too intoxicated you should stop drinking

c.     You notice someone keeps buying you drinks at a bar

3.     Have a plan

a.     Ask a co-worker to escort you to your car at night

b.    Have your cell phone out and ready to dial 911

c.     If you do plan on drinking in excess have someone stay close to you

4.     Fight to get away

a.     Fingernails

b.    Pepper-spray

c.     Car keys as a weapon

By working together as a community we can highlight sexual assaults and violence as an issue in our community and reinforce the need for prevention efforts and report those that unfortunately do occur.  Learn how you can play a role in promoting a healthy foundation for relationships, health and sexual violence prevention.
