Come October 1, 2020, Nevadans and all Americans will need to have a Real ID in order to board domestic flights. That’s in an effort to combat terrorism, identity theft, and other crimes.
Unless you have other types of federal ID's including a passport, that Real ID will be asked at the TSA checkpoint.
“You don’t want to have that happen if you just bought airlines tickets, you have hotel reservations, say it’s your honey moon, or your big job interview or funeral you have to go to, you need Real ID, so get to the DMV and get the ID,” says Brian Kulpin, spokesperson at the Reno-Tahoe International Airport.
The Real ID doesn’t look too different from the regular ID, but the main difference is the yellow star you see on the top right corner -- that star shows you are authorized to come and go and if you don't have it, you simply can't travel.
Today is the one year mark away from when you need that ID. Once at the DMV, you need to present proof of identity, proof of social security number and two residency documents.
Those are the same documents you used to get your Nevada license or ID the first time. Now you just have to show them again, plus two documents that show your Nevada residential address.
There is no additional fee for getting a Real ID.
