Every fisherman has a tale of the big one that got away, but that wasn't the case for Brendan Burnham on Sunday.
The Reno man broke a state record. According to the Nevada Department of Wildlife (NDOW) Burnham reeled in a 35 pound, 3 ounce carp at Virginia Lake in Reno. The previous state record was 34 pounds and 10 ounces.
Not a lot of fisherman consider carp as sporting fish, but Burnham says it's his favorite type of fish to catch.
According to NDOW, carp are non-native species in Nevada which are actually considered a nuisance, since they ruin the habitats for native species. However, NDOW says it is great for fishing.
Burnham has caught and entered 46 trophy fish over 15 pounds in 2019. The trophy fish program is a way to get anglers excited about the fish they catch.
NDOW has minimum weight requirements established for various species that must be met.
NDOW also says Nevada's urban ponds have great fishing. If you're not planning on fishing for carp, NDOW started its urban pond stocking season for western Nevada. Between spring and fall, it stocks 20 urban ponds and streams in western Nevada with about 88,000 trout. NDOW tries to stock the ponds every two weeks when conditions permit, which is typically from March through June, and then again in September through October.
