Reno Mini Maker Faire Showcases Talent in the Biggest Little City

Get your paint brushes and safety goggles ready, the Reno Mini Maker Faire is on Saturday.

Artists, inventors, and scientists are coming together to show off their craft, while teaching a thing or two about making things. Other than browsing the works of art from more than 70 makers, you can build a rocket pack, fly drone, or even learn how to make copper sculptures.

Imagine if you could make a fire breathing dragon or a hot air balloon. That's what Don Kennedy from Cosmic Copper hopes to inspire people with at the Reno Mini Maker Faire.

"I want them to have a hands on experience. Especially the younger ones to see how easy it is to work, make and create your own thing," said Kennedy.

Kennedy retired several years ago and picked up the hobby of metal art after he left his career in agriculture. Now he's using his love for plants in his designs, like a flower, which he'll be showing children how to make.

"Trim it up so it looks more like a leaf. Take a piece of wire and put it on there and weld a stem on it," said Kennedy.

Don't worry, he'll be the one using the torch at the faire, but it's demonstrations like his that the Reno Mini Maker Faire is all about.

Chrissy Klenke, the Executive Producer of Reno Mini Maker Faire said, "It's incredible some of these things that aren't really exposed because they are made in on their kitchen tables or their garages. So this is opportunity to bring out awesomeness and show our community and inspire them."

You can also expect to see robots, inventions, and flying drones.

Mason Wheeler is another maker coming to faire, showing off his business, Build My Drone.

He'll be teaching people about 3D models, electrical soldering, how to build a drone and of course of how to fly them.

"Being able to get kids to get their hands on stuff, learn how to build stuff, I feel is really cool.  That's kind of what the Mini Maker Faire is all about," said Wheeler.

Klenke adds, "The Reno Mini Maker Faire is a really unique event that brings people together to start conversations and to get people to share what they're doing."

The Drone Store will also be hosting a race at the event.

The Reno Mini Maker Faire will be at Idlewild Park on Saturday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. It's free for children 12 and under and seven dollars for adults.
