The Reno Tahoe International Airport is staying as busy as ever with the holidays. But the boost in travel has actually been increasing all year long. Nearly 3.6 million passengers traveled through the airport in the last year. That's 50,000 more people than the previous year. It's all because of more destinations being added, including a new nonstop flight to Atlanta, Georgia.
"This has been one of those pivotal cities that we've seen from the community that they really wanted to have the service because it makes business connections so much easier," said Marily Mora, the CEO of the Reno Tahoe International Airport.
More than 150 passengers boarded the Delta airlines flight to Atlanta on Tuesday. More than 100 connections fly in and out of the Hartsfield–Jackson Atlanta International Airport every day, where it's the busiest airport in the world. Reno Tahoe International hopes this latest addition will benefit travelers.
Currently 125 flights fly out of Reno per day and about 16,000 passengers board those planes. And the numbers keep on growing. Back during the recession, 35% of flights were cut. With the economy getting better, more flights to Atlanta, New York City, Guadalajara, Mexico and many more are being added to the list.
Brian Kulpin, the spokesperson for the Reno Tahoe International Airport said, "We've added 1,200 seats to our market in the past year and a half. That's amazing to see the amount of seats that we have offered. That's great for our economy, our hotels, ski resorts, businesses and our personal travelers."
As of now, there are 23 destinations and eight airlines at the airport. Reno Tahoe International plans to add more flights to more places in the future.
