Reno Woman Falls to Death from Cliff in California

Authorities say a 21-year-old woman from Reno, Nevada died Friday afternoon from an accidental fall off a cliff in San Pedro, California.

Los Angeles Fire Department spokesman Brian Humphrey said that firefighters were dispatched at about 2:10 p.m. to the 500 block of West Paseo del Mar to assist police and coroner’s personnel at the scene.

Officials say Lorena Barrera, who had just moved to California from Reno, was found dead at the base of a cliff after falling in the Point Fermin Park area. They say she was trying to get a photo of the view and the Pacific Ocean when she slipped. Two friends of the victim were with her and said they tried to save her, but were unable to.

Teresa Wood, who lives near the cliff, said she’s seen several deadly accidents there over the years.

She worries visitors don’t realize the danger of climbing over the walls to get to the edge and wants more signs warning people not to do it.

“I’m not sure people would necessarily adhere to them, but I don’t think it’s a bad idea,” Wood said.
