The Rotary Club of Sparks is donating a dictionary to every third grader in Washoe County on Monday.

Club members will travel to local elementary schools, giving nearly 5,000 third graders a new dictionary.

"Literacy is an important issue for Rotary International and we think this is a great way to help in our own community," says Sparks Club Secretary Mike Hix.

Officials say the dictionaries are specially handpicked to fit the needs of young students learning to read and write. The books have a larger print, they're filled with common third grade terminology, and they're made to fit little hands.

According to Hix, "the third grade was targeted because this is the age when children are beginning to learn the importance of words; in their speech and in their writing."

The Rotary Club of Sparks is a leadership organization, made up of local business, professional and civic leaders.
