While Monday's weather wasn't ideal for typical Memorial Day events, like camping or boating, summer is still on the way.Â
It's tempting to go on your next adventure as the weather gets warmer, but it's easy to forget some of the most important things like a first aid kit or a life vest that could save you in a dangerous situation. Â
"When you're swimming you might not want to go too deep because you might drown. But if you have your life jacket, you still don't want to go too deep because your parents or guardian won't see you, said Taylor Campbell and Mia Gerardo as they were visiting Little Washoe Lake in Washoe Valley.Â
Reno firefighters say some of the most tragic calls they get in the summer time are drown victims or near drownings.Â
"Especially with your kids, be extra careful," said Battalion Chief, Seth Williams with the Reno Fire Department. "If you can teach them to swim early, that's always a great call. I know for me, some of my proud moments were when both my boys had their bicycle helmets on and their swim vests because they know if its summer time, they're by the water or they're riding their bikes, you really can't be too safe."
It's also good to keep in mind that during our ongoing drought some locations like the Truckee River may have more obstacles sticking out.Â
"When its low, sometimes people want to walk out there and do more stuff. That keeps our wet team very busy because we have people get foot entrapments as soon as they're stuck, broken ankles, low leg injuries," said Williams.Â
Park rangers also remind us that while there's not much water in places like Washoe Lake, there still are essentials you should have with you in case of an emergency.Â
"We really want to remind people to wear their life jackets, wear sunscreen, and hats. Bring insect repellent and keep a close eye on your kids at all times,"
said Kim Zuch, Park Interpreter for Washoe Lake State Park.Â
It's also important to bring plenty of drinking water, no matter what you are doing outdoors, being in the sun can make you dehydrated.
"Enjoy your summer, be safe, and enjoy the water, but make sure you have a good memory and not a bad one," said Williams.Â
