Officers who defended Capitol from rioters sue to block payouts from $1.8B ‘anti-weaponization’ fund
Two police officers who helped defend the U.S. Capitol during the Jan. 6 riot are suing to block anyone from receiving payouts from a new $1.776 billion settlement fund for people who claim to be victims of politically motivated prosecutions. The lawsuit was filed in federal court Wednesday in Washington. A day earlier, acting Attorney General Todd Blanche defended the new fund during a congressional hearing. Blanche wouldn’t rule out the possibility that rioters who assaulted police on Jan. 6, 2021, would be eligible for fund payouts.
Tennessee officials will pay $835,000 to settle a lawsuit filed by a man who was jailed for more than a month over a Facebook post he made about the assassination of conservative activist Charlie Kirk. Retired police officer Larry Bushart spent 37 days in jail last year before authorities dropped the felony charge against him. He was arrested after he refused to remove memes joking about Kirk's death. The Perry County sheriff said one of Bushart's posts alarmed residents because it referenced a school shooting. Bushart says he was exercising his free speech rights and never should have been arrested.

Authorities say the two teenagers who shot and killed three people in an attack on a California mosque had been radicalized online where they first met. Investigators said Tuesday that the pair shared white supremacist views and left behind writings showing their hatred toward various races and religions. Authorities also found at least 30 guns, ammunition and a crossbow at two residences after Monday’s attack. Authorities praised the security guard at the Islamic Center of San Diego and two other men who were killed for slowing the attackers. They say the victims helped stop the attackers from reaching schoolchildren just steps away. Police have said the shooters killed themselves.
A judge has paused the prosecution of a woman charged with the attempted murder of Rihanna while it is determined whether she is mentally competent to stand trial. Deputy Public Defender Derek Dillman told a Los Angeles judge on Tuesday that he has doubts about the competence of his client, 35-year-old Ivanna Lisette Ortiz of Orlando, Florida. She has pleaded not guilty to more than a dozen felonies. A mental health court will now decide whether she should go to trial. Authorities allege that Ortiz sprayed at least 20 bullets at the property of Rihanna, her rapper-partner A$AP Rocky and their three young children. No one was hurt.
