Effective July 1, students enrolled in the 12th grade throughout Nevada will be required to receive the meningococcal vaccine.
Washoe County Health District says there are now 47 cases of viral meningitis reported since July 15th of this year.
An unusually high number of viral/aseptic meningitis cases have health officials in Washoe County concerned, particularly since the outbreak coincides with a similar outbreak of viral meningitis in Susanville.
The Lassen County Public Health Department is investigating one confirmed case and 21 suspected cases of viral meningitis, most of which are reported to be in connection with the Lassen High School football team. . Earlier, it said there were four confirmed cases.
Under a new requirement by the state of Nevada, the meningococcal vaccine (MCV4) will be required for all Nevada seventh graders or new students entering school in grades 7-12. To help students and parents prepare for the new requirements, the Carson City Health and Human Services will be available every Thursday.
The school district just announced that students will need to get the meningitis vaccine before entering seventh grade in the fall.
