Nevada lawmakers are reviewing a bill that would roll mandate school start times and require an ethnic studies course in order to graduate from high school.
Democratic Sen. Tick Segerblom is sponsoring Senate Bill 211 which is scheduled for a hearing Thursday in the Senate Education committee.
The bill would mandate that Nevada high school students pass a course in ethnic studies focused on sensitivity to all nationalities and races.
A section of the bill also requires each school district to set the time for the commencement of the school day which must not be earlier than 7 a.m. at an elementary school, 8 a.m. at a junior high school or middle school and 9 a.m. at a high school.
Republican bill co-sponsor Sen. Becky Harris said the bill would give students additional sleep and more flexibility in scheduling extra-curricular activities before school. (AP)
