Sparks Fire Department Hosts National Fire Prevention Week Event

On Saturday, the Sparks Fire Department held their 27th annual pancake feed and open house to help kick-off national fire prevention week.

At the event, SFD educates the public about the importance of fire safety with live emergency demonstrations and face to face education.

Division Chief Bob King says national fire prevention week is a time where children and adults can come together with local fire agencies to learn valuable lessons in how to safely prepare and be fire ready.

“From smoke detectors, to fire escape plans, how to call 911 and what to say when you have an emergency," says King.

King says the Reno-Sparks area has had more fires in 2016 than the several years prior. It’s for this reason he says these kind of educational trainings are important. He says all civilians should know what to do in the case of a fire before it happens.

Several local residents said the information taught on Saturday was educational for them and their families.

Lee Leighton, a retired fire chief says, “Stop, drop and roll, I mean things we learned when we were kids that we all remember and we're teaching our kids and it's just an extension of that."

Kathy G. from Hidden Valley says, “I pass it on to my grandchildren and it’s a good way for everybody in the community to learn something new."
