No Charges Filed in Case of Suspect Dying in Custody

Sparks Police officer shoots and kills a dog that attacked three people at an apartment complex.

Police say that on Friday, July 7 at about 7:58 pm, they were dispatched to an apartment complex in the 1000 block of El Rancho Drive for an assault and battery that was happening between neighbors.

One person told police that they were bit by a dog during the assault. While on scene, officers say they heard a woman screaming from a neighboring apartment. Police say a man came out of the hallway, holding his arm that was bleeding and a woman was in the entryway to the apartment with the dog physically latched onto her upper arm, biting her.

Officers say they tried to remove the dog from the woman's arm by grabbing at its throat and head when the dog let go of the woman and tried to bite the officers. One of the officers tried to use a taser on the dog, but was unsuccessful at deploying it and officers shot the dog twice, killing it instantly.

SPD says the man and woman from the other apartment were the other party in the assault and battery as well as being the dog's owners.

Two of the victims were transported to the hospital for treatment and the other neighbor declined medical treatment.

Washoe County Animal Control arrived on scene and handled the dog bite report and the deceased animal.

Sparks Police did not arrest anyone in the assault and battery case at this time, but it will be submitted to the Sparks City Attorney for any possible charges.
