In a race set up as part of the country’s 250th birthday celebration, President Donald Trump gave drivers the green flag at the start and D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser served as grand marshal. Kirkwood crossed the finish line in front of the U.S. Capitol 3.09 seconds ahead of Christian Lundgaard. Kirkwood led for 128 of a possible 147 laps. Pole winner Alex Palou, who had a chance to clinch the series title, finished 20th.
Scheffler says he played BMW Championship with hand, foot and mouth disease
ST. LOUIS (AP) — Scottie Scheffler says he was sick at the BMW Championship and he shared just how bad it was. After closing with a 68, Scheffler says he had hand, foot and mouth disease. That causes blisters on his throat, his hands and his feet. He says he was able to walk OK, but he had trouble gripping the club all week. Scheffler had 13 bogeys, which is unusual for him. He hit only 65% of his greens. He says he probably should have withdrawn considering nothing was at stake this week in terms of his position in the FedEx Cup.

SANTA CLARA, Calif. (AP) — San Francisco 49ers star tight end George Kittle was taken off the physically unable to perform list, providing hope that he might be able to return from a ruptured right Achilles tendon before the season opener. The 49ers got good news on the injury front 10 days before the team was set to depart for Australia for a Week 1 game against the Los Angeles Rams on Sept. 11 with both Kittle and All-Pro running back Christian McCaffrey both back at practice. The Niners are scheduled to leave for Australia on Sept. 2.
Nordic soccer associations have 'lost confidence' in FIFA boss Infantino
STOCKHOLM (AP) — Six Nordic national soccer associations have piled more pressure on embattled FIFA president Gianni Infantino by saying they had “lost confidence” in his leadership. The associations from Sweden, Norway, Finland, Denmark, Iceland and the Faeroe Islands issued a joint statement Sunday to say they “view the organization’s governance and decision-making at the highest level with great concern.” They said they stand united with European soccer governing body UEFA and support the measures it has already proposed. Infantino faces pressure to resign after his plans to sell future World Cup profits to private investors triggered a backlash and criticism from UEFA, CONCACAF and the Asian Football Confederation.

NEW YORK (AP) — Serena Williams and Carlos Alcaraz will have to wait a little longer to learn their first opponent in the U.S. Open mixed doubles championship. Williams and Alcaraz were drawn Sunday to face one of the teams that advances from the eight-team qualifying tournament that will be played Monday. Williams will be returning to the U.S. Open for the first time since 2022. The six-time singles champion and Alcaraz, who has won the men’s title twice, were awarded a wild card into the 16-team tournament Saturday. The first round and quarterfinals of the mixed doubles are Tuesday, with the semifinals and final on Wednesday.

Eagles' Ja’Quinden Jackson has movement after being taken off in ambulance following injury
FOXBOROUGH, Mass. (AP) — Philadelphia Eagles running back Ja’Quinden Jackson was taken off the field in an ambulance after being injured on the opening kickoff Saturday night in a preseason game against the New England Patriots. The Eagles announced that Jackson had strength and movement in all extremities and had been taken to a hospital for further evaluation. Jackson was on the kickoff team and made the tackle, but he laid motionless after New England’s Lan Larison was tackled at the 25. Trainers rushed in almost immediately as medical personnel from both teams attended to Jackson. They quickly called for a backboard and ambulance.
