Some residents are concerned about the future of bears in our region. That is in light of recent break-ins and killings, especially around Lake Tahoe.

"We are very concerned about our bear population, it's not very robust, as a matter of fact, it's very tiny," says Staci Baker, resident.

Electric mats, dogs and catch and release are some tactics in place to keep bears away, but properly keeping trash can be a big issue in bear country. Many people keep trash in their garage and food accessible, so bears do come around and go inside homes. in 2020 NDOW has received 129 calls for break ins. They have handled 17 and euthanized 2 bears.

"That is not going to be decided by the person in the field, they will relay that to the directors office, where that entire situation will be looked at and they will decide," says Jessica Wolff, with NDOW.

The decision to euthanize a bear is based on the type of bear and the type of incident, but some people believe bears shouldn't be euthanized at all.
