Astronomy is neat and depending on the weather we may be able to see an annular solar eclipse in northern Nevada Saturday morning.
While it will be a cool sight to see, you never want to look directly at the sun, even during an eclipse. This kind of eclipse will have what’s called a ring of fire, or an outer ring of the sun shining through.
A total eclipse will occur in parts of the United States in 2024. This year’s annular solar eclipse takes places in northern Nevada on Saturday, reaching it’s peak at 9:21am.
According to NASA, the Truckee Meadows will see 85 percent obstruction at this time. Elko will see closer to 100 percent.
No rain is in the forecast this weekend, but cloud cover will move in from the southwest Friday night. Unfortunately, this will be enough cloud cover to hinder the viewing of the eclipse, making it pretty challenging to see.
The center of the low will move into the Pacific Northwest early this weekend, where there is a better chance for rain. Skies will go from mostly cloudy Saturday morning in Reno to partly cloudy in the afternoon.
There will be a partial eclipse at 8:21 Saturday morning with increasing clouds. By 9:21am Saturday morning, the eclipse will be reaching its peak and skies will be mostly cloudy. The eclipse will be done by 10:45am Saturday morning. There will be partial eclipse between the time when the eclipse is at it’s peak and is completely done. Reno should be back to normal by 10:46am Saturday.
Sky cover at this point will be partly cloudy to mostly cloudy. According to NASA, the next annular solar eclipse will be in June of 2039, and Alaska will be the only state that will be in its path.
So what is a solar eclipse?
A solar eclipse is when the moon is located between the earth and the sun, allowing for the moon to cast its shadow on the earth.
When the moon covers the sun, but not entirely, it’s called an annular eclipse.
When the sun is completely covered by the moon it’s called a total eclipse.
There will be a total eclipse in the United States in 2024, but you will have to travel somewhere like Texas to see it.
