The Washoe County School District School Naming Committee has shortlisted 11 semi-finalist names for the new elementary school that will be built at the current Pine Middle School campus.
The community is now invited to participate in a survey to help committee members narrow their selection list at a public meeting on Monday, July 27 at 5:30 p.m. at the WCSD Administration Building.
The survey is available in English and in Spanish.
Both surveys will be available online until Tuesday, June 30 at 5 p.m.
Members of the community are also welcome to attend the meeting on July 27 to provide public comment. At that time, the committee may vote to send up to three finalists to the WCSD Board of Trustees for a final name decision.
The 11 semi-finalists under consideration by the School Naming Committee are:
* Arlan D. Melendez
* Edward L. Pine
* Elizabeth “Betty” Morris
* Evelyn Mount
* Frank Marfisi
* Fred R. Horlacher
* John Flynn
* Juanita Ydiando
* Sessions S. “Buck” Wheeler
* Smithridge
* Wa-Pai-Shone
“We appreciate the thoughtful suggestions we received from the community, and it was difficult for us to narrow the list to just 11 names,” said Megan Downs, chairperson of the School Naming Committee. “Our committee is looking forward to hearing further input from the community via the survey and at the public meeting to help us select prospective school names to present to the Board of Trustees. It is truly an honor for all of us on the committee to be a part of something so meaningful, and we greatly appreciate the community’s input on this major decision.”
