As the coronavirus continues to stay on everyone’s minds many local grocery stores are hiring new employees to try and keep up with the big increase in customers.
Shelves that are usually stocked to the ceiling at Costco are looking empty. Staff says they need extra hands with the extra work. That is one of the reasons why they are hiring to keep up with an increasing number of people looking for the basics.
“My kids are all out of school and things like that, and we are okay and everything and being home they tend to eat a little more, breakfast lunch, dinner, snacks. Just stocking a little bit because they are out for three weeks now,” says customer Candace Pitts.
To keep up with that demand, Costco says they are hiring but temporarily. They are paying $15 an hour.
That could be a good option for those now out of school and wanting to work during the outbreak.
Costco isn't the only one: Safeway and Save Mart are also in need of extra hands. Safeway for example says they need people full time and part time staff. Save Mart says they are hiring 1,000 people in Northern Nevada and California.
“They need people to not only police what is going on in and out and fill the shelves that are quite empty we notice,” says customer Mark Smith.
