A man took his own life amid a standoff with Elko Police on Friday in Ryndon.

At 3 p.m. on Friday, an Elko Police detective and a member of the Department’s Crime Suppression Unit were surveilling Michael Kimery, who was thought to have a car reported stolen from Elko and was a suspect in a sexual assault of a minor, according to a post on Facebook from the EPD.

Officers confirmed the car was parked at a home while driving by, and a few hours later saw Kimery get in the passenger side of a car with another man.

They drove away, and police pulled them over near the Ryndon exit.

When detectives and deputies tried to contact Kimery, police say he pulled a handgun and threatened to kill himself.

The driver was taken out of the car and moved to a safe location.

The Elko SWAT Team and Hostage Negotiation Team were called in, and negotiators spoke with Kimery for hours trying to get him to put the gun down and get out of the car.

Eventually, the SWAT Team used chemical agents to try to get Kimery out of the car, at which point he took his own life, police said.

Had Kimery been arrested, he would have faced charges including embezzlement of a vehicle, possession of stolen property, sexual assault of a minor under the age of 14, prohibited person in possession of a firearm, and resisting arrest with the use of a firearm.

The Elko County Sheriff’s Office, the Winnemucca Police Department, the Nevada State Police, and the Nevada Department of Transportation all provided assistance.
