NAME: Hillary Schieve
AGE: 51
PARTY AFFILIATION: I’m a registered non-partisan
DAY JOB: Mayor of Reno, small business owner
EDUCATION: Some college
HOW LONG YOU HAVE LIVED IN NEVADA: All my life
WRITE A BRIEF (TWO TO THREE SENTENCES) SUMMARY OF YOUR PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE THAT WOULD ENABLE YOU TO PERFORM THE DUTIES OF THIS OFFICE:
I started as mayor during the Great Recession. I’m proud of how we worked together to create more opportunities in our community and believe that we can come through our current challenges the same way: together. I have the regional and community relationships to build consensus and get things done.
WHAT IS YOUR TOP PRIORITY IF ELECTED?
Regional public safety is critical now more than ever. I will work on community and neighborhood policing centers so that there is one in every ward. I’m also highly focused on the mental health side of the coin, including bringing more treatment options, like a 24/7 facility, to the region so that no resident ever has to go without care. Â
IN JUST A FEW SENTENCES: WHAT DO YOU BELIEVE IS THE BIGGEST PROBLEM FACING RENO, AND HOW WOULD YOU FIX IT?
We need to make sure that small businesses can thrive, not just survive, and that the people who work here can, too.
HOUSING AND RENT PRICES ARE AT RECORD HIGHS. WHAT’S YOUR PLAN TO HELP EASE THE HOUSING CRUNCH IN RENO?
Keep focusing on housing that meets some or all of the following needs: affordable for working families to rent or ideally purchase; inside the core to avoid unmanaged growth; affordable for seniors and young people; options for people who are currently homeless. These are not in order of importance specifically, but I do believe that more options for working families and seniors will help ease the housing crunch for the other groups, so I’m focused on helping make those kinds of houses as easy and attractive to build as possible. I’m glad to say that the city has invested tens of millions of dollars to build in blighted areas. The people who work here, like teachers and police officers, should be able to afford to live here, too.
IN ONE SENTENCE: WHAT’S THE MOST IMPORTANT THING VOTERS SHOULD KNOW ABOUT YOU?
I believe the future of Reno is bright, and am relentless in my efforts to make sure that my optimism turns into results.
YES OR NO: WILL YOU ACCEPT THE RESULTS OF THIS ELECTION, WHETHER YOU WIN OR LOSE?
Yes. Of course.
